Sewing Happiness

Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am from Sellersville, PA. I am a single lady with 2 sons in college. I love to sew and create, and I have had my Etsy store for almost 2 years now. It helps me relax and destress from the "real" job!

How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
My shop name "Greenlioness" is derived from my love of "green" products/lifestyle and my 22-year-old son's love of lions. Thought that those 2 things made a cute "handle." I started my shop to make reusable snack, sandwich, lunch, and shopping bags because I wanted to help the green efforts and to help children learn about the benefits of reusable products.

What are 5 things you want people to think when they see your product?
Five things people should think when they see my products: That I am a happy old hippie lady who loves fabric, loves sewing, and can create a product that is both fun, usable, and long lasting. Oh, I also like machine washable!!

What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
I am a fabric addict, big time. I used to have a linen closet by my bathroom; now I have a fabric closet!

What do you do when you’re not being an artist? What activities do you enjoy?
I am a certified medical transcriptionist. I have been in this field of work for 31 years now. I would love to retire and just sew, but as I mentioned I have 2 kids in college!

Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
I recently started making plush, baby/child safe stuffed animals, and I am really enjoying that. As you put on the faces, they seem to come alive and get a personality. Then when they sell, it is kinda hard to part with them!

What keeps you motivated?
Bills keep me motivated. Rent, college tuition, electric, phone, vet bills, need I go on?

If you could give a piece of advice to a new shop - what would it be?
My piece of advice to a new shop would be to join a team. Find a good, active team and jump in head first. It is the best way to make friends, see what others are doing to stoke your own creative mind, and become more involved in what Etsy has to offer us as store owners!

Are there other places on the net we can find you?
I have a FB page. Please stop by and Like me.

Very cool interview! (And we understand about the fabric -- we used to have a garage. Now, we have a shipping supply warehouse!)

What a wonderful post on Katherine. Luv how u came up with your shop name. I purchased an American doll bed set, it is very soft and quite luxurious. If it were bigger, I would sleep on it myself...

I have purchased several handmade items from Katharine. They are extremely soft and show great attention to detail. I usually don't pre-purchase baby gifts (before I need them), but these were just too wonderful to let them get away! I have enjoyed getting to know Katharine better through the common Etsy Teams of which we are members.

I recently purchased a BoHo Sling Bag from Katharine that I LOVE, and it is so well made! I have several bins full of new, never touched material in my basement from my sewing days! Anyone interested? LOL Good Luck with your shop. You do beautiful work.
